Q. Where do I find spot prices for coal?

There are two types of coal--metallurgical and thermal.   

Spots prices for coal are not a large part of the market.  Most coal is through long term contracts.  Spot prices fill in a gap of increased need or poor planning.   

• Global Financial Data has prices for coal from 1825-present.  Be sure to check the sources - the data available from 1975 and onward is from Australia. This is likely to be metallurgical coal, which is priced higher. 
• The US Energy Information Administration releases coal prices each Monday. This data comes from S&P Global Market Intelligence: https://www.spglobal.com/marketintelligence/en/.  S&P Global has data back to 2005. 
• The EIA also produces an Annual Coal Report. Archive reports are on the site back to 1994.
