Build custom lists of companies using the following databases:

Capital IQ

Research platform that combines information on global companies, markets, and people with robust tools for fundamental analysis, idea generation, and interview preparation. Covers public and private companies.

To build a company list: 

  • Click on the Screening tab, then select Company Screening
  • Look for the Company Information box, located on the left side of the page.
  • To search for companies by location, choose Geographical Locations. Select preferred locations and click Add Criteria.
  • To search by industry, click on Industry Classification. Here, you will be able to select an industry from the tree or search by keyword. Click Add Criteria. Tip: Not sure which industry to select? Look at the company profile of a company that you know you would like to work for and see how they are classified. 
  • To search for specific practices or lines of business, consider using a keyword search of company business descriptions.

If you are screening to build a target list of companies for a job search, consider the following criteria:

  • Is the company still operating? Look for Company Status and select Operating and Operating Subsidiaries under Company Status.
  • Interested in working for a large or small company? Look for Company Statistics and set a minimum or a maximum number of employees. This can help when you have a large number of results. 
  • Looking for companies with Yale alumni? Look for the Education box, located in the third column. Select Colleges/Universities and search for Yale. Choose from the list of results, and click Add Criteria. 

After desired criteria are selected, click View Results. Screens can be saved and modified, and results can be exported to Excel.

Orbis

Database by Bureau Van Dijk with information on more than 400 million companies worldwide. Notable features include extensive coverage of private companies and corporate ownership structures. 

To build a target list of companies:

  • Select the Search icon from the left navigation menu to create or build a search tool
  • To search by geographic location, select Location from the left-hand column, then choose a country, region, state, city, or zip code. Click OK. 
  • To search by industry, select Activities and Industry. Select Industry Classification to limit your search results by SIC, NAICS or NACE codes. To search the business descriptions for keywords, select Activity. Click OK. 
  • To search for companies by their size or revenue, select Financials. Next, choose Key Financials and Employees. Click edit to select specific criteria and click OK. 
  • Add ay additional criteria, then click View Results
  • Add or remove columns to customize your results list, then export to your preferred format. 
  • The Orbis Help Menu features links to interactive tours, video tutorials for building a search, and more. To access the menu, click on ? icon located in the upper right corner of the page. 

 

Mergent Intellect

A searchable directory of business information that features access to U.S. and international business data, executive contact information, and industry research. Data is provided by D&B Hoovers.

To build a custom target list of companies: 

  • Select Advanced Search
  • Select from the various criteria options and make your selections on the resulting forms. Click the add to criteria button every time you add additional filters or variables to your search. 
  • To export your results, click Select All and click Build FIles. You can select the fields you would like to export. 
  • The Mergent Help site and Mergent Intellect How-To Videos are excellent sources for getting help with an advanced search.

 

CB Insights

Covers global VC, PE, M&A, and IPO activity related to private companies. Requires users to register for an individual account, using a Yale email address on the Yale CB Insights portal.

To build a target list of start-up companies: 

  • Log in to CB Insights and follow the Advanced Search link located at the top of the page. 
  • Click on the Companies tab to select the Company search type, and choose from the filters located on the left side of the page. 
    • To search by geographic location, select Company Attributes
    • To search by latest funding round, investment stage, and latest funding date, select Financing & Exists
    • Financing & Exits can also be used to limit your results to VC-backed companies or investor type
  • The platform will automatically refresh your results list when new filters are selected.
  • Tip: Use CB Insights Expert Collections to search for companies by non-traditional industry categories. Examples include AgTech, Telehealth, Bike, and Scooter Tech, and Esports. 
  • To add additional columns of data to your list, click on the + icon, located in the upper-right corner.
  • To export your results, select companies using the checkboxes to the left of the company name. Once companies are selected, you will see an option to download your results.
  • Company searches can be saved to your individual account. 
  • Standard accounts are limited to downloading up to 6,000 company or investor profiles each year. 

 

Pitchbook

Features real-time data to research and analyze companies, PE & VC deals, funds, investors, and service providers across the entire private investment lifecycle. Requires users to register for an account on the Yale Pitchbook portal using a Yale email address. Commercial use is prohibited. 

To build a list of VC or PE-backed companies: 

  • Login to Pitchbook and select Companies and Deals from the left navigation links. 
  • Choose from PE-backed, VC-backed, Public or All Companies
  • Select Industry to select industry, verticals, or keyword criteria.
  • Choose Location to refine your search by geography.
  • Click the Search button in the upper-right corner to view your results.
  • Downloading is limited in Pitchbook, but searches can be saved to individual user profiles.
